2021 Guaranteed Rate Bowl Game

📅 Date:Tuesday, December 28, 2021
⏲️Time:10:15p.m. ET
🏟️Venue:Chase Field, Phoenix, Arizona
📺 Watch:ESPN
🏈 Teams:West Virginia Mountaineers vs Minnesota Golden Gophers

The Guaranteed Rate Bowl is typically played at the Arizona Chase Field Stadium. Teams from the Big Ten and Big 12 conferences take part in the game. It’s changed names over the years, from the Copper Bowl to the Insight Bowl and then Buffalo Wild Bowl and Cactus Bowl. Confusingly, it’s also gone by the name of the Cheez-It Bowl, which now has its own college football non-playoff title. Guaranteed Rate became the bowl sponsor in 2020 for this matchup.

Betting on West Virginia Mountaineers

West Virginia Mountaineers finished the Big 12 season 4-5 and 6-6, ending on a high with a tight 34-28 victory vs Kansas. It was the story of the 2021-22 season as West Virginia secured a few tight wins or narrow losses. The Mountaineers particularly struggled on the road, recording 2-4. That doesn’t bode well as the WV team head to Phoenix for the Guaranteed Rate bowl game.

A change of personnel in the regular season will certainly help West Virginia going forward. In fact, West Virginia led the way for transfers this year on 27. Brian Polendey is on his way to WV following time at Colorado State. He fills the gap left by T.J. Banks, who entered the transfer portal at the beginning of December. Head coach Neal Brown has a good track record in bowl games with two wins, one coming in New Orleans back in 2017.

West Virginia can still count on quarterback Jarret Doege, who made over 2,900 passing yards for 19 touchdowns this season. Leddie Brown will also hope to build on his 13 touchdowns in the bowl game. If you can find player props, Brown is the smart move for the first touchdown.

Betting on Minnesota Golden Gophers

Minnesota Golden Gophers have a poor record in Guaranteed Rate Bowl games (0-3) but 2021 should be the year they turn that around.

They ended the season 6-2 and 8-4 with one of the meanest defenses in town. An average of 18.25 points conceded suggests a defense that doesn’t let many teams in. Couple that with West Virginia’s turmoils in the transfers and it points to a comfortable Minnesota victory.

All eyes will be on quarterback Tanner Morgan. Morgan threw for 10 touchdowns over the season and will be a good pick on the player props if you can find them.

This will be familiar territory for Golden Gophers head coach, PJ Fleck. He won the Outback Bowl in 2019 with Minnesota, and the Quick Lane Bowl a year earlier. He also had success with Western Michigan Broncos, securing the Bahamas Bowl in 2015 before narrowly losing the Cotton Bowl Classic in 2017. Fleck knows how to get the best out of his football teams and it should be a good matchup.

The odds on the Guaranteed Rate Bowl game are now out. You can back a winner on the moneyline market or hit the point spread if you favor the underdog.

Guaranteed Rate Bowl Moneyline Odds

A moneyline bet is a market on the winner of the Guaranteed Rate Bowl. The Golden Gophers are slight favorites at around -190, with West Virginia the underdogs at +160. That means you’d have to bet $190 to win $100 on the Golden Gophers, or $100 to win $160 on the Mountaineers.

Guaranteed Rate Bowl Point Spread Odds

The point spread bet is great if you predict a tight game. The sportsbook will assign the underdog a points advantage before the game. The favorite will receive a handicap of the same value. You bet on whether either side will win with their adjusted points total.

As favorites, Minnesota has the handicap – most US sportsbooks go -4.5 points for the Golden Gophers and +4.5 points for West Virginia. The odds are the same for either outcome.

Guaranteed Rate Bowl Totals (Over/Under) Odds

A totals bet is a wager on the number of points scored during the game. The sportsbook will set the point mark and you must predict whether the total will be under or over that mark. For Minnesota vs West Virginia, the Over/Under is around 44.5 points. If the game ends 43-10, for example, the over bet would win.

You can also bet on individual team points if the game total is too hard to predict. Minnesota are -110 to hit over 24.5 points, with West Virginia a -110 shot to score over 20.

Guaranteed Rate Bowl Prop Bets

Team prop bets on games are available at the leading US sportsbooks. Props are wagers on various events during a game. They may not relate to the final score and you can usually settle a prop before the game finishes.

For example, the best online sportsbooks will offer bets such as the first team to 15, 20 or 25 points. You can also bet on the team to be winning after the first quarter. Bet in-play too on the team to score the next touchdown.

Minnesota to Win -190 @ Golden Nugget Sportsbook

Minnesota goes into the Guaranteed Rate Bowl with a better season and better form. They only recorded two losses this season, one of which – vs Iowa – was mighty tight. The Golden Gophers also conceded an average of 18.25 points per game. That’s the kind of mean defense that should see them over the line.

Go Under 44.5 Points on the Totals -110 @ Golden Nugget Sportsbook

West Virginia scored for fun in some of their final games of the current season. However, the Minnesota Golden Gophers had one of the meanest defenses this year. They only conceded 184 passing yards per game on average, and that could tell in the bowl game. A totals bet is a solid alternative to the spread in this game.

Minnesota to Win the 1st Half -150 @ Caesars

While total points have been low for Minnesota, they also come out storming in many college football games. The Gophers have won the 1st Half five times in their past seven games.
