The 2022 Guaranteed Rate Bowl marks the first time Wisconsin and Oklahoma State have met in football. The game will take place at Chase Field stadium, the home of the Arizona Diamondbacks. It is one of four host sites this year for bowl gamines being contested in a Major League Baseball stadium. The others are at Fenway Park, Petco Park and Yankee Stadium.

Wisconsin enters the game with a 6-6 record (4-5 in the conference), racking up an average of 26.5 points per game, while holding their opponents to 20.5 points.

The Badgers tallied signature wins during the season over Purdue, Maryland and Nebraska. The Madison, Wisconsin-based school won four of its final seven games, and, earlier in the season, scored as many as 66 points in a game.

The Badgers are making a bowl appearance for the 21st straight season, third longest in the FBS.

The key storyline for UW is Graham Mertz, the Badgers starting QB, who announced that he will enter the transfer portal. Although having started all 32 games for the Badgers over the past three seasons, he has decided to move on and look for another team after the recent head coaching change when Luke Fickell took over the team from Paul Chryst.

Oklahoma State enters the Guaranteed Rate Bowl with a 7-5 record (4-5 in the conference). The Cowboys have given up some points during the season, averaging 29.33 points surrendered per game, but also can score, putting an average of 31.75 points on the board per game.

The Cowboys got off to an impressive 6-1 start, including wins over Arizona State, Baylor and Texas Tech. The fast start was highlighted by a 41-34 homecoming win over the Texas Longhorns on Oct. 22. 

The one setback during this span was a 43-40 double overtime loss to TCU, an ultimate national title contender, whose quarterback, Max Duggan, was a Heisman finalist.

After that strong start, the Cowboys only chalked up one victory in the last five games, including a 28-13 loss to cross-state rival Oklahoma. Spencer Sanders, OSU starting QB, has also declared for the transfer portal and will look to play out his final year of eligibility elsewhere.
